And how did it come to pass that one in every seven phones sold in 2024 was used?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are just some of the questions discussed at the recent MobileDisrupt conference in Florida, where hundreds of C-level leaders gathered to discuss who will set the rules for the reuse technology industry of tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The secondary market is no longer secondary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image.jpeg 624w, https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-426x240.jpeg 426w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to IDC, reused technology is now the third-largest segment in global smartphone sales\u2014after Apple and Samsung. In 2024, the secondary market reached $75 billion, growing at a CAGR of 10.4%. Some 208 million used phones were sold last year alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, one in seven phones sold globally is not new. The average smartphone passes through 2\u20133 users in its lifetime\u2014clear evidence of a consumer shift toward rational, circular consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"563\" height=\"347\" src=\"https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-2.jpeg 563w, https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-2-300x185.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the secondary market is not just growing\u2014it is actively eating into the new device segment. New smartphones now lose up to 45% of their value in the first six months, nearly twice as fast as just 3\u20134 years ago. The reasons are well-known: oversupply, a lack of technological breakthroughs, and declining upgrade motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"513\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-1.jpeg 513w, https:\/\/breezy.band\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-1-300x192.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, refurbished devices offer greater financial and operational stability:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More liquid resale value<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Longer price plateaus for 1.5\u20132-year-old models<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More predictable margins\u2014especially with vertical integration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grading: Time to speak a common language<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another key takeaway from the conference is that the industry is finally ready to unify device grading standards. CTIA\u2019s updated <em>Wireless Device Grading Criteria v5.0<\/em> represents the first real attempt at creating a universally understood language of device condition\u2014useful to everyone from logistics coordinators to end customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does this matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It removes the subjectivity of A\/B\/C grading<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It reduces returns and disputes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It builds trust across supply chains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It enables large-scale B2B transactions between regions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At Breezy, we adhere to rigorous <a href=\"https:\/\/breezy.band\/az-en\/production\/\">grading standards<\/a> that closely align with the CTIA framework. To succeed, a circular model must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Automate evaluation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accelerate routing (repair, recycle, resell)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integrate with production cycles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritise speed-to-market over ownership of every process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., Samsung has partnered with local providers\u2014an approach mirrored by many Breezy partners across Europe, Asia, and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The last mile of Trade-In: Flexibility beats infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One striking takeaway: customers want choice in how to return their devices.
